2009 Scion xD Hatchback
Its replacement is the all-new Scion xD. Looking like what we've described as a snub-nose 1916 Mack AC truck, the xD is now the brand's entry-level model. It has a more powerful engine, a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options. Many automakers have struggled to offer inexpensive cars that don't make the owners feel like they are in a penalty box when it comes to style and enjoyment. With the xD, Scion has bucked the trend. While there are some downsides such as a lack of cargo space and oddly placed gauges, this vehicle otherwise presents a clear advantage in the intangible, X-factor category. Current Scion xD The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic. Like all Scions, the xD hatchback comes with an extensive standard features list and very few factory options. The standard features include full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, the in-car entertainment consists of a standard Pioneer 160-watt stereo with an MP3-compatible CD player, an iPod/auxiliary audio input and audio controls on the steering wheel. While the only factory option is electronic stability control with traction control, there is a laundry list of available dealer-installed options that lets buyers customize their xD in a way that reflects their individual style. With more than 40 available accessories including larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system, a carbon-fiber engine cover and an overhead console, you won't likely see two xDs equipped the same way. In addition, Scion encourages aftermarket companies to also develop accessories for their vehicles, so the xD owner will have no shortage of products with which to further individualize their vehicle. Audiophiles will enjoy the optional premium audio system that adds rear head unit outputs, allowing one to hook up external amplifiers to power additional speakers or a subwoofer. The premium stereo also has the ability to download displayable "skins." Owners can download images and 8-second video clips from Pioneer's Web site, or create their own and have them displayed on the head unit. DVD satellite navigation will also be available. On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine makes it more satisfying to drive than other cars in the class. The hatchback also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. Ride quality is also quite good. The only major drawbacks to the xD are its center-mounted gauges, which take some getting used to, and cargo capacity that's a bit less than the segment's average.
